SHER DEN & TWIN CITY DRIVE IN

This is a picture of my car in front of the Sher Den Twin Drive In which is located in Sherman Texas just off Sam Rayburn Freeway. To the best of my memory it closed down in 1986 around the start of my junior year in high school. The sign out front said "1966-1986 RIP". It was a very sad day for it was the last drive in of its kind in north Texas. This is where I saw movies like Star Wars & Close Encounters. Movies just are not the same in a mall.

The Twin City Drive In was located right on the line between Sherman and Denison. I still remember it well. My mom would take me to the movies here when I was very young. The shows here were "b" type shows. The last one I remember seeing was something called Laser Blast followed by End of The World. Both were terrible shows but I loved the drive in.

The marquee is one of the few parts of the Twin left standing. In case you are wondering about the car it is a 1974 Chevy Nova SS. It had a 350 cu. in. V-8 and I miss her. During the Gulf War I could not afford to drive it and I needed money so I sold it for a mere $800. I'm currently looking for a replacement. It's amazing how much we overlook things when we are young that we miss later in life.

Vandals take over the moment a place like this closes down and in a few years it is almost impossible to make out the structures. This picture is of the ticket both at the Twin. The concession stand is in much worse shape. The screens have been torn down for fear of liabilty. Currently the property is for sale. Most of the kids in the area have no idea what a neat place this was at one time.

Today If you want to go to the drive in theater in this part of Texas you are going to have to make a day of it. The nearest drive in theater is a good 150 miles away. Back in the early 1980's they were everywhere. You could drive 30 minutes in any direction and find one. Alas in the day of broadband cable, dvds, and multiplex monsters only memories remain.

I get a lot of email asking about the Sher-Den Mall and what ever became of it. I have made a page dedicated to the now defunct mall. You can read all about it and see photos right before its demolition HERE
